Rockville Brass Band Defends Title at North American Competition

Rockville Brass Band has won at the North American Brass Band Association (NABBA) Championships for the second year in a row

Rockville Brass Band has won at the North American Brass Band Association (NABBA) Championships for the second year in a row. Held in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the 2018 NABBA Championships featured over 35 British-style brass bands from the United States and Canada competing in four sections. Each band performed one test piece chosen by NABBA and a second piece chosen by the band. Competing in the second section, Rockville Brass Band performed Frontier Vision by Stephen Bulla, local resident and former staff arranger for the U.S. Marine Band, and Tallis Variations by British composer Philip Sparke.

Members of the Band also took home five other awards at the 2018 NABBA Championships. Trombonist Gerald Hendrickson won first place in Senior Low Brass Technical competition. Percussionist Caleb DeGroote won first place in Adult Percussion Solo competition. Flugelhornist Bill Ichord won second place in Senior High Brass Slow Melody competition. Cornetist Zach Allyn won third place in Adult High Brass Slow Melody competition. And the Band’s Cornet Sextet won second place in Adult Brass Ensemble competition.

Alicia Callan, a cornetist and member of the Band’s board of directors, said “It was inspiring to see and hear the best brass bands in the country perform such exciting and difficult music. We were very happy to be able to defend our championship and I am thrilled that our band and band members won many awards!”

Founded in 1976 and rooted in Montgomery County, Rockville Brass Band is a British-style brass band comprised of musicians from around the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. Members include professional players, music educators, and serious amateur musicians from Maryland, Northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
