Advance your skills as a high school, college, or senior brass player in a one-day clinic with Maryland’s finest Brass Band and its guest artists on June 6, 2026. Perform with them in concert the next day, June 7. Ambitious high school and undergraduate students can also compete for scholarship funds by submitting a solo recording, attending the clinic, and performing with the band. Here are the details on both opportunities: the clinic & the scholarship competition.
At the clinic on June 6, you will join in rehearsals and performance clinic with The Rockville Brass Band and its guest instructors and soloists: trumpeter & cornetist Susan Rider, and ephonium artist Andrew Ribo (see their biographies, below). The clinic takes place 9:45-3:00 at Cabin John Middle School, 10701 Gainsborough Rd., Potomac, MD.
9:45 - 10:00: 15min meet and greet
10:00 -11:30: 90min rehearsal with students, seniors and soloists
11:30-12:30: 60min lunch (We'll provide a bag lunch)
12:30 -2:00: 90min low brass and high brass clinics
2:00 - 3:00: 60min rehearsal for all music on June 7 concert
The clinicians may offer to workshop etudes or solos from the attendees. So, if you have a piece prepared, bring it along.
On June 7, you will join the clinicians and the Rockville Brass Band on stage, for a warm up and sound check (time tbd) and a concert at 2pm, at Richard Montgomery High School, 250 Richard Montgomery Drive (southeast side entrance), in Rockville, MD. Both of our clinicians will perform solos with the ensemble that day.
The Rockville Brass Band is Maryland's oldest British-style brass ensemble. It has won national awards over its five decades of concerts. The band members are former military band professionals, music teachers, and serious amateurs, all of whom welcome the opportunity to play side-by-side with rising brass players.
You can join the brass clinic by submitting a registration form and payment by May 23 at this link or through the QR code below. To apply, you must meet these criteria: (1) you play cornet or trumpet, tenor horn, baritone horn, trombone, euphonium, Bb tuba, or Eb tuba; and (2) in Fall of 2026 you will be (a) a high school junior or senior in a Maryland, Virginia, or DC public or private school, (b) an undergraduate student whose home or college is in the DMV, (c) or a senior citizen who plays regularly and lives in the DMV. Members of the public may observe the clinic, but must also submit the registration form. The registration fee for participants and observers is $25 payable by check (preferably) to Treasurer, Rockville Brass Band, PO BOX 4565, Silver Spring MD 20914-4565, or at our PayPal Giving Fund. We'll use those dollars to buy you a bag lunch during the clinic.
The schedule for the event is at the foot of this page. If you have questions about the event, please email president@rockvillebrassband.org (cc: pr@rockvillebrassband.org).
Students who apply for the clinic are eligible to enter a solo competition for scholarship funds. The high school and undergraduate soloists who place first will each win a $750 scholarship.
To apply for the solo competition and scholarship award, you must meet the criteria for the brass clinic (above); (3) be a high school or undergraduate student; (4) commit to attending the clinic and its concert; and (5) submit a recording of a solo performance. Please submit the registration form by May 23 and submit a $50 registration fee ($25 clinic registration + $25 competition review fee) at the addresses above.
Your solo recording should be a 2-5 minute video with or without accompanist. Rising High School juniors and seniors may choose a solo or excerpt freely from the repertoire. Rising and current undergraduates should submit a recording of a movement from a concerto or a sonata. Please select work at a level of difficulty that represents your skill. Send a link to your video to president@rockvillebrassband.org no later than May 23. The Rockville Brass Band Music Director and selected principal chairs will judge the solo recordings. The Music Director will announce the winning high school and college soloists at the concert on June 7.
Two outstanding brass artists will lead the June 6 clinic, along with the Band’s music director, and perform with you at the June 7th concert.
